(BTW, some of the video I am exporting was actually originally in VHS, recorded nearly 30 years ago on an old tube camera and transferred to miniDV around 2004! The quality of a few of those was really, really bad. In iMovie, I would choose 'Movie to DV Stream' as my export and in the options box what type of container is recommended? (DV, DVCPRO, or DVCPRO50)? I understand the basic differences - retention of aspect ratio etc - but I'm not confident as to which is necessary for me.Īlso: interlaced or progressive? I've been doing interlaced, but I don't get the advantages or disadvantages. So my next choice was to use FCP to edit the video into fragments whose video exports results in no more than 4 gb files (I have yet to figure out how long the segments will have to be).

DVD-Rs only hold 4.7 gb each, so I'd have to use a backup program to fragment the dv file and then I'd be dealing with technology problems with that - I've lost some data in the old days due to fragmented files rendered by software that had been discontinued and nothing else could read it. Unless I'm printing back to tape (which is cheapest) I'm dealing with massive files and, eliminating hard drives, not many media choices left. What I'd like to do is store my videos in a media that I know I'll be able to access for a good amount of time going forward, and that's the tricky part. So I am very leery of using external hard drives as an external solution, and I don't have money to invest in any bigger server / backup solutions. I have a closet filled with smaller external hard drives that died within a year, from different brands. So far so good with these two, I've had them for several years, but both of them had brothers that were sent back due to some failure or another. For some reason I always get externals that fail. I have had a long history of bad external hard drives. But there are so many tapes that my drive filled up. The purpose has been to get all my GL1 tapes offloaded so I can get the camera cleaned and realigned.

Right now I am using one as a temporary offload storage box, as I intended to then move the video onto some other media. I actually have two RAID 0 1tb drives, however I should note that I am not using them to store my videos permanently. Lastly, DV is not an extinct species because editing in SD is easier and storage wise more manageable than HD, so unless you are getting paid big money to shoot and edit in HD, sticking with DV is fine. Once your footage is saved in *.DV format, it's ready for editing. You can use your RAID 0 drive to edit and render your project. Image those files immediately to a bare drive and then store it somewhere safe. Then save that footage to DV-AVI or *.DV file with the DV codec. If you want to ensure you have a reliable backup workflow, transfer your footage first into the computer with a simple video program. Once their camcorders got fixed, they were unable to retreive their backed up footage. I have a client who runs a camcorder repair shop and many of them run into the same problem. Which is also why, I am not a big proponent of Print to Tape feature on older iMovies using as backup because you are physically at the mercy of that camcorder to retreive your footage.

I'm not surprised that if you record DV footage in SP with pro equipment and that footage can't be played on consumer camcorders or vice versa. Very few people store it in like a Pelican or padded cases. Consumer camcorders do not tolerate wear and tear better than pro equipment, which means they can go out of alignment tape wise quicker if subjected to the same abuse as pro equipment, usually caused by impact. But when you're dealing with LP or some SLP modes, these are only playable on specific machines they are recorded on. Ideally though, if footage is shot in 'SP', then if the machines follow the DV standards however, they should be playable on any miniDV tape deck. There are 2 variables that dictate playability on tape systems. Speaking of tape decks, I really don't have a definite answer. But when you got a hold of the new controller (New RAID box)and as soon as you stick those old drives back, more than likely they will get reformatted! Not a good thing when those are your only backup. Whereas with a RAID, when the controller goes, the drives are not accessable.

Have you considered say an external drive case that takes bare drives and you can then simply swap out drives as they become full? Secondly, if they are formatted in either NTFS (for Windows) or Mac OS Extended Journalled, you can retreive your backed up footage from any Windows or Mac machine. I hope you're not using RAID 0 as your one and only render and backup drive?
